José Luis Guerín is one of the most respected Spanish directors of our time. En construcción (2001) made him well-known due to several prizes he received. The film, set in El Raval, a popular neighbourhood in Barcelona, depicts a contemporary event styled like a documentary with amateur actors. As a result of this success, Guerín was immediately labeled the master of a young generation of filmmakers and a genre–blender, something he repeatedly denies. For him, there are no differences between fiction and documentary. Before En construcción, the director had already proven himself worthy of this recognition. After a few short films, he directed his first feature Los motivos de Berta (1985), in which an influence of French directors such as Robert Bresson or Philippe Garrel could already been felt. But his first truly accomplished films were Innisfree (1990) and Tren de sombras (1997). Both work on the notion of “traces,” something the author seems focused on: “This has always been my orientation: walk and observe. What stimulates me is to give a semantic value to the traces left in the landscape.” The past can be summoned through these traces, usually found in ruins. This leads us to another idea in his cinema: film as sketch. His are not polished or finished in a traditional way. Of all the myth films by Pasolini, his favourite is Appunti per un’Orestiade africana (1970) because “this is not a film, but the shooting of the possible materials for that film.” It is a bit like sculpturing: “Ruins are the beginning and end; they are actually quite alike, in that both give you an incomplete image. From that, you rebuild a city, or a picture.” His last fiction films, En la ciudad de Sylvia (2007) and La academia de las musas (2015) – recently premiered at Locarno – both develop this idea of incompleteness; they are like sketches for other films. Certainly, not one that José Luis Guerín would make. His cinema, as the title of his popular film says, seems to be continuously “under construction”, and that is why we love it.
