Africas in rhizomes

Program by
Marta Kucza, Katy Lena Ndiaye, Rosa Spaliviero

Édouard Glissant borrows the term “rhizome,” proposed by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, as the principle behind his Poétique de la Relation (Poetics of Relationships), according to which “all identities branch out in a relationship to The Other.” From this perspective, we’re talking about Africas, because they take root while in perpetual motion, a point of reference simultaneously real and imaginary and provided with plurality and heterogeneity. Our line-up shines a light on productions by filmmakers from Africa and its diaspora in order to examine which paths their creations have taken and which Africas feed their imaginations. Africas in rhizomes presents diverse cinematic approaches to the real. Because of this, certain films are closer to fiction, even science-fiction (Afronauts), while others come in contact with the world through a more immediate, direct manner. There are several among them which make an effort to unearth events forgotten by mainstream rhetoric (The Colonial Misunderstanding) in order to rally strength in the face of historical neglect. In contrast with conventional thought that, for a long time, appropriated the difference by imposing its own explanations, certain films bring their events to life (The Master is Drowning and Western 4.33) and provide access to spiritual belief systems captivated by physical objects and bodies. The event will make particular mention of Bakary Diallo’s films, honored this year at Bamako’s Biennial. Other documentaries borrow norms from realism and involve an intellectual perspective. Bringing up Edouard Glissant: One World in Relation and The Stuart Hall Project, the voices of the two contemporary philosophers, recently departed, are heard. Their speech, mirrored with the past and the present, allow us to grasp at their intuitive, profound visions of today’s world. According to Édouard Glissant, in order to oppose oneself to the perpetual state of violence that characterizes our current era, we must change our collective imagination. We hope that the films presented here will expand the presence of Africas in rhizome in the spectator’s imagination.
